Marketing doesn’t have to be stressful or awkward, especially if you’re a founder, business owner, coach, or consultant trying to figure out what works. In this post, I’ll share five ways to make marketing simpler, more fun, and even more engaging for your target audience.
1. Have an Avatar
The first step to simplifying marketing is knowing exactly who you’re talking to. This is where an avatar comes in. Think of your avatar as a detailed profile of your ideal customer. When you create content, you should be speaking directly to this person.
For example, I have three avatars I always think about when creating content:
- People who want to become virtual assistants (in my mind, I’m talking to my sister, who was starting her VA journey).
- Coaches, consultants, or business owners like you, who need help growing their businesses with a virtual assistant.
- I connect with aspiring entrepreneurs through my podcast.
Focusing on a specific avatar makes it easier to tailor your message and make it resonate. You’re not talking to everyone—you’re talking to someone specific.
2. Engage First, Value First
Instead of jumping straight into calls to action or trying to sell, focus on engagement and value. Think about what your audience will find valuable or interesting. What would make them want to comment, like, or share?
Over the years, I’ve built a strong community by leading with value-creating content based on feedback, requests, and questions from my audience. This approach not only helps build trust but also gives you endless ideas for future content.
If you’re not naturally inclined to create, think about what kind of posts would spark conversation or encourage engagement, even if it’s something a bit controversial. The goal is to get your audience talking and interacting with your content.
3. Map It Out
With your avatar and value-driven content in mind, it’s time to map out your strategy.
- Where is your audience hanging out?
- What platforms do they use the most?
- What content format will they enjoy?
When I started, I focused on YouTube and LinkedIn, where my target audience is most active. I kept it simple by posting regularly, sticking to a routine, and repurposing content for other platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
If you’re just starting, create a basic content plan. Consistency is key—even if you’re only posting three times a week. As you grow, you can build a team to manage this, but for now, keep it simple and manageable.
4. Use AI
Why not make your life easier with AI? There are tons of tools available that can help streamline your marketing process. From creating avatars and generating content ideas to mapping out your marketing strategy—AI can do it all.
I have multiple videos on how to use AI for marketing, but the simplest thing you can do is ask AI to assist with your planning and execution. Let it take over some of the repetitive tasks so you can focus on more important aspects of your business. Think of AI as your co-founder—use it to maximize your efficiency.
5. Get Data & Adjust
One of the biggest lessons I learned early on was tracking data.
When you track what works and what doesn’t, you can adjust your strategy and save time. Look at what content gets the most engagement and focus on doing more of that. For example, after seeing how successful my YouTube Shorts were, I started creating more short-form content.
Don’t be afraid to cut out the content that’s not working—it’s a waste of time. Keep refining your strategy based on data to ensure you’re putting your energy into what actually drives results.

As a business owner, coach, or consultant, your time is precious. Keep your marketing strategy simple until you can delegate it to a team. Start with the basics, build consistency, and let your passion for what you do shine through. You are the expert on your product or service—and that’s what makes your content unique.
