In the Scale You Podcast, we had the honor of having MK Bertulfo, the founder of Filipina Homebased Moms (FH Moms) and a serial entrepreneur dedicated to empowering Filipino mothers to work from home. With a journey that started in 2017, MK has built a thriving community of over 560,000 members, helping countless individuals transition into freelancing and entrepreneurship.
From Freelancer to Community Leader
MK’s story begins in the corporate world, where she struggled with balancing work and family life, especially as a first-time mother. Long commutes and rigid schedules made it difficult for her to be fully present for her family. This pushed her to explore freelancing, where she found opportunities in virtual assistance, social media marketing, and customer service for international clients.
Recognizing the potential of remote work, MK founded FH Moms as a Facebook group to share insights and resources with other moms interested in freelancing. What started as a small support group quickly transformed into a robust community-driven platform offering courses, training programs, and job opportunities for aspiring virtual assistants and freelancers.
Scaling Impact Through Business and Innovation
As FH Moms grew, MK saw an opportunity to expand beyond community building. She launched various initiatives, including:
- Digital Skills Training – Providing comprehensive courses in accounting, bookkeeping, social media marketing, and more through collaborations with expert trainers.
- Job Matching Services – Connecting virtual assistants with clients through recruitment programs, including a major partnership where FH Moms helped a BPO company hire 200 employees at once.
- Laptop Rent-to-Own Program – A solution born out of the pandemic, this initiative supported aspiring freelancers by giving them access to computers on a rental or installment basis.
- Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Projects – Distributing refurbished laptops and Wi-Fi devices to underprivileged moms, supported by corporate sponsors and celebrities.
The Power of Community-Driven Growth
MK attributes the success of FH Moms to genuine community engagement. She traveled across 23 cities and provinces in the Philippines, hosting in-person meetups to foster deeper connections. These efforts, combined with strong partnerships and continuous learning through startup incubators and accelerators, helped FH Moms scale into a registered corporation during the pandemic.
A Ripple Effect of Inspiration
MK’s entrepreneurial journey exemplifies the ripple effect—how one person’s passion can create waves of change. By listening to her community and adapting to their needs, she has built a sustainable ecosystem that empowers thousands of Filipino mothers to achieve financial independence through freelancing and entrepreneurship.
Her story serves as a powerful reminder that when you care enough to make a difference, success follows. Whether it's through education, job opportunities, or support systems, FH Moms continues to inspire and uplift Filipino families—one mom at a time.
