When you hire someone new, no matter how much experience they have, they will need a way to be able to know what to do in your business.
Employee training is one of the most essential processes in the hiring cycle in my opinion. It can aid in your new employee’s chances of succeeding in your company, or it can hurt it.
Training your employees doesn't have to be the usual one-on-one training or one-to-many training where you're standing in front of them – this can range from books to courses, or even working with other coaches!
So if you’re about to either hire or you’ve already hired someone new, here are a few tips on how to ensure that your employee’s training process goes smoothly as they get started in your new company or with a new task.
- Check Their Skill Level
This should have already been addressed during the hiring process, however, you do want to make sure that you know where your employee is at with particular skills.
For example, if you’re hiring a virtual assistant who will be managing your calendar or your email, you can ask them about their usual process of doing so, or what their solution would be when it comes to organizing yours.
Try to check where they’re really at so you can adjust their training accordingly.
- Create Their Training Strategy
Realistically create the first 30, 60, and 90-day training program for your remote employee, keeping in mind the tasks that they’ll be doing as well.
This way your employee has the freedom to create habits to go through the training themselves, as well have backup work in between tasks or projects.
- Show Them Any Documentation That You Have
One of the fastest ways to get your new hire up to speed is by literally showing them how things are done in your business.
Record your screen as you're doing certain tasks or explaining certain processes in your company, or write them up as it becomes a “recipe” that they can follow to create the same result.
- Give Access To Your Resources
Besides the documentation, give your new hires access to the tools, articles, and other materials that they'll need to get started with their tasks.
- Set Realistic Goals
Whether you create weekly, monthly, or quarterly goals with your new hire, create them with your employee realistically, this way they have something to look forward to.
What is something that they can actually achieve in this timeframe?
People usually overestimate what they can do, so make sure to be open to being flexible when it comes to setting these goals.
- Have Frequent Check-Ins
To make sure that the previous goals won't fall through the cracks, set up routine check-ins with your new hire.
In 2xYou, we incorporated doing Daily Reports and Weekly Check-In Calls to see where our assistants are at in their training and if they need to adjust anything.
- Have Them Apply What Their Learn/Test Their Skills
Learning graphics? Check their latest work. Studying a self-development book? Have a discussion about what they've learned or planning to apply to their life.
Checking in with their training and seeing what they're learning so far will help give you the feedback you need to see how effective the training was.
- Celebrate Their Wins
Finally, celebrate it once they're done! Remind them of where they came from and how far they've come, and encourage the consistent growth of their skills.
Reward especially if they've done something that was above and beyond, and give them feedback on what you look forward to now that they have this particular skill.
Training a new employee doesn't have to be overwhelming – you can create the system and update it once in a while as needed.
And remember, feedback is key. The faster and more accurate you're able to give your new hires feedback, the faster they can grow their skills.
